The Nicholas Story
For Nicholas Liebowitz, a fascination and experience with art, design, mathematics, spirituality, gems, and lapidary skills converged during many years in Michigan and California.
“I got interested in gems many years ago when I first saw a magnificent design cut into a stone. The creative and spiritual aspect really appealed to me. I liked the thought of placing a symbol – whether it’s a star or a cross or something else – into a beautiful gem of the earth. The ‘symbology’ is very cool.”
Today his unique professional skills as a fine gem artist can be viewed on this website. He has designed and cut a variety of precious stones and gems that customers bring to him or are sourced on the open market.
In addition, Nicholas adds a truly unique facet to the collection. Several times a year, he can be found mining mountains in western states, searching for precious stones and gems. Using only hand tools, he’ll dig into a mountain pocket filled with crystals. During the process, he’ll carefully examine the pocket’s loose dirt for precious stones and gems – hence, the term “Pay Dirt”.
Nicholas will then take his special treasures back to his studio where he’ll spend days and weeks examining the stones for characteristics and possible distinct designs. His creative process begins when he maps-out the stones flaws, color, clarity and other features and then sketches several gem designs.
Using his own mathematical coding pattern, his designs often follow the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio which is a natural design seen in plants and trees.
When Nick is not creating beautiful works of gemstone art, you can find him with his first passion; his wife and their young son.
